Topic:         2009 MALAS Conference to be held in Dallas

SAINT LOUIS, MO – March 11, 2009 – The 59th annual conference of the Midwest Association for Latin American Studies (MALAS) will be hosted by The University of Texas at Dallas during November 19 – 21, 2009.

 

“We are happy to have the 2009 conference in Dallas and we recognize the importance the state of Texas has with Latin America,” said Jaime Torres, president of MALAS.

 

The schedule of events includes a luncheon, panel presentations and welcome reception on Thursday, paper presentations all day on Friday and a Texan dinner that evening.  Saturday morning will include paper presentations and in the afternoon the MALAS business meeting.

 

Torres also announced that the theme for this year’s conference is “Latin America and Global Crises: Past, Present, and Future”.  “I urge faculty in all disciplines to consider attending the conference and to respond to the Call for Papers as soon as possible,” he added. 

 

MALAS is interdisciplinary and welcomes papers on a variety of Latin American topics.  Proposals should be in by September 30, 2009.  For information on papers and sessions, please write to Jennifer Holmes at jholmes@utdallas.edu.

 

Suggested topics include the following: Political Change; Democratic Processes; Natural Resources; Environmental Studies; Culture and Identity; International Relations; Sustainable Development; Free Trade Agreements; Literature, Art, Music; Gender Roles; Economic Crisis; History and Landscape; Migration Topics; Indigenous Peoples; New Technologies; Social Justice and Human Rights; Country Studies; Regional Economic Integration; Caribbean Topics; Immigration; etc.   Other paper topics are welcome!

 

The Crown Plaza Dallas Near The Galleria will be the headquarter hotel.
