It is with great pleasure that we invite you and your colleagues on behalf of Webster University in St. Louis to participate in the Annual Meeting of the interdisciplinary Midwest Association of Latin American Studies (MALAS) to be held on the home campus of Webster University in Webster Groves from November 3 - 5, 2005. The conference, whose theme is New Horizons in the Americas / Nuevos Horizontes en las Américas, promises to be an exciting event. A number of sessions and papers have been proposed and we are still looking for more sessions and paper presenters, including students' papers !
The MALAS conference remains an excellent opportunity and exceptional value among professional and academic association meetings. The all-inclusive registration fee is $95 for professionals with early pre-conference registration and includes access to paper sessions PLUS a Thursday reception, Friday luncheon and night banquet followed by entertainment, and Saturday luncheon. Special rates are available for students. Prizes (with monetary value) are awarded to the best undergraduate and graduate papers. Bring your students along!

• Thursday Nov. 3 -- Webster University Reception: 4:30 - 6:30 pm (Sunnen Lounge). Registration packets available for pick up beginning at 4 pm in the reception lounge. Option: Council on Foreign Relations - St. Louis Committee dinner at 6:45 pm for a fee, or attendance to hear speaker at 8 pm gratis.
• Friday Nov. 4 -- Continental breakfast: 7:30 am (Sunnen Lounge).
  Luncheon: Noon - 1:30 pm (Sunnen Lounge)
  Reception and Banquet: Cash Bar 7 pm. Banquet served at 7:30 pm at Sheraton Clayton Plaza Hotel, Clayton, MO 63105. Phone: (314) 863-0400. Musical entertainment 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm.
  
• Saturday Nov. 5 -- Continental breakfast: 7:30 am (Sunnen Lounge)
  Luncheon: Noon - 1 pm (Sunnen Lounge), followed by the MALAS business meeting.

As usual, the academic program will include panels with papers in the social sciences and the humanities. There will be three major plenary addresses by influential scholars. This year, our major speakers include the following:

• Elzbieta Sklodowska, an expert on Cuban narrative and culture, the poetics and politics of memory, the Spanish-American narrative from the 19th and 20th centuries, and testimonial literature. She has published six books, including two edited volumes, and more than 60 articles.
• George R. Vickers, Regional Director for Latin America at the Washington office of the Open Society Institute. In this capacity, he oversees all OSI activities in Latin America and acts as a liaison between OSI and the national foundations in Guatemala and Haiti.
